Review: YouTubers speak from Hart, with touch of Grace
While tweens are sucking on shot glasses to get '90s Kylie Jenner lips, another trend is taking over the Internet. YouTubers are coming out with books —like all of them.
It's as if Oprah announced, "You get a book, and you get a book and you get a book." Because there are so many content creators cranking out these published gems — and because my editor only allotted a half page to this little ditty — we've had to narrow it down to the books of the "Holy Trinity." That's YouTube speak for Grace Helbig, Hannah Hart and Mamrie Hart.
Grace's Guide: The Art of Pretending to be a Grown-Up by Grace Helbig
Available in most books stores
This New York Times No. 1 Bestseller is exactly what it says it is: a guide to pretending you've got your life together … when you're actually on your book cover in a neon orange pant suit. The book is broken up into sections with tips for your professional life, social life, love life and lifestyle — with some of Helbig's personal stories tucked in.
Among her how-tos for hanging out by yourself, getting over a hangover and doing the walk of shame, Helbig shares her own experiences dealing with anxiety.
Helbig is known for her YouTube channels, but has also starred in the Indie flick Camp Takota, and most recently launched her new show on E!, The Grace Helbig Show. As you flip through the pages of the guide, you'll not only see hilarious photos of Helbig, but also interactive pages.
One worksheet for surviving a breakup instructs the reader to draw his or her ex, with a penis on his or her forehead, with scrotums for arms and legs and then with a chicken stuck in his or her butt.
You Deserve a Drink: Boozy Misadventures and Tales of Debauchery by Mamrie Hart
Available for preorder at ydadbook.com
This one hasn't been released yet, but if it's anything like the fiery redhead who totes around a chihuahua named Beanz, shakes up killer cocktails and spits wild rhymes, it's bound to be great. Mamrie is known for her YouTube channel You Deserve a Drink, on which she whips up shots, cocktails and everything in between. Therefore, her book is filled with out-of-the-box recipes, but that's not all.
In it, she will also share some of her outrageous drinking stories, "from the spring break where she and her girlfriends avoided tan lines by staying at an all-male gay nudist resort, to the bachelorette party where she accidentally hired a 60-year-old meth head to teach the group pole dancing, to the time she lit herself on fire during a Flaming Lips concert," according to Amazon.
Mamrie is the writer of Camp Takota, and has also taken her comedy on the road with Helbig for the YouTube series Hey USA and in person for their #NoFilter show.
My Drunk Kitchen: A Guide to Eating, Drinking, and Going with Your Gut by Hannah Hart
Available in most books stores
It's hard to believe Hannah's career all started after a drunken night in her kitchen. After deciding her cravings for toast could not hold off till morning, she decided to film herself whipping up the tasty snack and post it on YouTube. That decision led to a channel with almost 2 million subscribers, and this book. But this isn't your mom's Joy of Cooking cook book.
It's stuffed with unique recipes for things like breakfast pizza, which is topped with your favorite cereal. Another thing you'll find in this book is tons and tons of puns, plus an adult in a carrot onesie. And as an adult, Hannah will teach you that sometimes saltine crackers with sour cream and salsa are going to your dinner for the night. And throughout the book are life lessons … straight from the Hart.
Hannah also starred in Camp Takota, is the third leg of the #NoFilter show and has sparked a nationwide philanthropy event called Have a Hart Day, during which different communities volunteer their time.
