KeyHarmony takes on silky, smooth competition
UCF's all-female a cappella group KeyHarmony is among the top-three finalists in a national competition to win $10,000.
The Schick "Aca-Battle" Sweepstakes is a contest between the top all-female collegiate a cappella groups in the United States to promote the movie Pitch Perfect 2, said Sarah Bookout, a junior elementary education major.
Everyone is encouraged to register and vote for their favorite a cappella group during the promotion period, which ends Friday at 11:59 p.m.
Along with KeyHarmony, the top three finalists include Main Squeeze from Syracuse University and The Sedoctaves from the University of Florida.
To compete, each group is required to choreograph a routine and make a music video to their version of the Schick "Ready, Shave, Shine" Regimen Song, which has unique lyrics to the tune of the song "Bang Bang" by Jessie J.
"KeyHarmony decided to enter because we thought it would be a fun little video to make, and we've never sang a song about shaving before, so there's a first time for everything," Bookout said.
If UCF's a cappella group wins the competition, Bookout said the members will use the money toward an a cappella conference that they will be hosting on campus, and to support a tour of the Eastern United States next spring.
TC Skowronek, a senior music, sociology and business major, said the money will also go toward purchasing the group's own sound equipment.
"We are thrilled to have this opportunity, and we can't wait to see what happens," Skowronek said.
A random drawing — which includes the names of everyone who voted — will be conducted on Tuesday to award a winner and a guest with the grand prize of a four-day trip to attend Universal Studios in Hollywood, California.
According to the site, the grand prize includes a round trip, coach air transportation from a major airport near the winner's home, three-night hotel accommodations, two tickets for three days to Universal Studios Park and a $500 spending allowance.
