Arr mateys, Krispy Kreme offers free donuts to pirates
Avast, ye mateys! Krispy Kreme is offering a dozen free donuts to any sea dogs or scallywags who come dressed in their finest pirate regalia on Friday.
Corsairs must wear at least three of the following items to qualify for the sugary booty: an eye patch, pirate hat, bandana, peg leg, parrot on the shoulder, pirate shirt (white or striped), knickers, leather belt, pirate hook, silver or gold necklaces or earrings and pointy black boots or ragged brown sandals, according to a message in a bottle found on krispykreme.com.
The promotion commemorates International Talk Like a Pirate Day, an event started June 6, 1995, by Oregon natives John Baur and Mark Summers during a fierce match of racquetball, according to the official history on talklikeapirate.com.
Their motivation was simple: Talking like a pirate is fun.
After nationally syndicated columnist Dave Barry published a feature on the ad-hoc holiday in the Miami Herald on Sept. 8, 2002, the event rose to international prominence, celebrated on college campuses and talked about on radio shows in Oregon, Ireland and Australia.
Basic pirate lingo includes Ahoy!, Avast!, Aye!, Aye Aye! and the ubiquitous Arrr!
