You may know someone with an eating disorder and not even know it.

"Twenty-five percent of college-aged women engage in bingeing (or binge eating) and purging as a method of managing their weight," according to The Renfrew Center Foundation for Eating Disorders.

The good news is there's help. From Feb. 23 to Feb. 26, UCF will be hosting daily events as part of National Eating Disorder Awareness (NEDA) Week.

"A variety of UCF offices, including Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), Health Services, Wellness and Health Promotion Services (WHPS), the Recreation and Wellness Center and student organization Project Heal are collaborating to promote healthy-eating habits and positive body image to the student community," according to a press release from CAPS.

Some of the planned activities include "Love Your Body Through Exercise" yoga and cardio dance classes, a panel on body image and eating concerns across cultures, a meet-and-greet with therapy dogs, a healthy-eating cooking demonstration, as well as a workshop promoting self-acceptance and how to seek help for eating concerns.

"NEDA Week is an opportunity for students to come together and build a culture of self and body acceptance on this campus," said Dr. Susan Tweeten, CAPS coordinator of the events for the week. "We also want to make students aware that if that if they are struggling with eating or body concerns, there is help for them here at UCF."

The feeling of guilt and shame associated with eating disorders often prevents people from seeking help. Schools across the country are dedicating time to this sensitive issue in honor of NEDA Week. UCF is committed to increase awareness, offer support and provide treatment options to those dealing with eating concerns.
