Some people escaped through the back of the club, while others were trapped inside as a hostage situation ensued.

2. Three-hour standoff unfolded: Officers from multiple departments arrived at the scene after the shooting. What followed over the following three hours was a hostage situation in which officers exchanged gunfire with the shooter.

3. About 20 dead inside the nightclub: "Approximately 20 are dead inside the club," the chief said during the news conference. Investigators are calculating an official death toll as they investigate the crime. At least 42 people were taken to the hospital. It is unclear what the condition of those victims are.

4. There appears to have been only one shooter: Contrary to rumors of a second gunman, police said there is no evidence to suggest there was more than one suspect.

5. Was it related to Christina Grimmie's death? The mass shooting comes barely a day after singer Christina Grimmie, known for being a finalist on The Voice, was shot and killed at the Plaza Live Theater in Orlando. Police confirmed at a news conference Sunday that the two incidents were not related.

6. Did the shooter have a bomb? Witnesses reported seeing a bomb in the gunman's possession, but the police did not confirm that detail. Police did say the gunman was armed with an assault rifle, a handgun and an unidentified device.

7. Was it terrorism? Police described the mass shooting as a "domestic terror incident." Authorities are investigating whether the incident was the work of Islamic terrorism. The FBI has been called to investigate the shooting.

When asked whether the shooter had ties to a Jihadist terror group, an FBI official said during a news conference that "we do have suggestions that that individual may have leanings toward that, that particular ideology. But right now we can't say definitively so we're still running everything around."
