In response to: “The mentally ill have to handle societal stigma that keeps them from reaching out, and often face humiliation via jokes and bullying.” 


The writer has much to learn, and will hopefully broaden her view.


We are neither a “the” mentally ill nor a “them,” but a very broad and diverse demographic, earning to the millions, holding every university degree and every professional, white and blue collar job. As individuals we have won every award a society has to offer, including the Nobel and Pulitzer.


This letter to the editor is in response to an opinions column titled "We need to keep talking about mental illness."
