It’s been 70 days exactly since UCF made its first stride toward bandaging a wounded Knights football team when Danny White was named UCF’s next athletic director. It’s been 57 days since White hired Oregon’s former offensive coordinator Scott Frost as the man to try and bring a new style of football to UCF. And now, UCF fans everywhere can sigh with relief because Frost as of Wednesday afternoon, finished assembling his official coaching squad and support staff.
Jovan Dewitt, the former Army West Point special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach from 2014-2015 is heading for Orlando after agreeing to come on board as the last piece to Frost's puzzle. He will serve as Frost’s new linebackers and special teams coach.
“I’m thrilled to have the final piece of the coaching staff in place,” Frost said in a UCF Athletic Communications press release. “We have a group which has tremendous character and qualities that form an extremely well-rounded staff."
During Dewitt’s time as the special teams coach, Army managed to block seven kicks while watching punter Alex Tardieu kick only two touchbacks on 50 attempts in his 2015 junior year campaign. He also landed 13 kicks inside the 20 with four punts traveling 50-plus yards.
“Jovan has climbed the football coaching ladder, and is very experienced including being a defensive coordinator, a special team’s coordinator and a recruiter in the state of Florida,” Frost said in a UCF Athletic Communications press release. “He has a ton of intelligence and is a high character coach coming from Army.”
Dewitt started his coaching journey in Florida at Florida Atlantic University from 2012-13. After taking over midway through the season as the defensive coordinator, FAU finished 11th in the country in total defense, ranking second in passing defense and eight in first downs defense.
Dewitt had earlier taken over Northern Iowa’s defense in 2009 the same year Frost had left to serve on the Oregon staff.
